Ingredients in toxic air fresheners

What is in those products that smell and work so well?

Those ingredients in toxic air fresheners are not as friendly as they smell. We've all used air fresheners at some time. To mask pet odors, sports equipment, damp vehicle carpeting, and cooking odors. Air fresheners control odors by a variety of methods.

These are:

  • Absorption: using materials such as zeolite, activated charcoal or silica gel;
  • Receptor blockers: which alters are ability to smell by blocking our nasal receptors so we cannot detect odors;
  • Oxidation: which is ozone, hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, peroxide, and chlorate which remove odor sources from surfaces and the air;
  • Sanitizer: odors from airborne bacteria can be removed by sanitizers that inactivate bacteria;
  • Masking: which is overwhelming one odor with another odor.
  • A small list of comparisons between toxic store brand products, including the ingredients in toxic air fresheners, and what we have used here at the indigo earth soap company:

    Oust Air Sanitizer, Citrus Scent:

    Ethanol/SD Alcohol 40,
    Propane
    Isobutane
    Butane
    Triethylene glycol.

    (indigo earth notes: We don't see any citrus anything listed above.)

    The Indigo Earth's Citrus Freshener:

    Essential oil blend of orange, lime, lemon and rosemary. Place essential oils in water 1:10 and spritz, or place undiluted drops in inconspicuous places.

    Lysol Brand II Disinfectant Spray Aerosol, Citrus Scent:

    Ethanol/SD Alcohol 40
    Triethanolamine
    Carbon dioxide
    Ammonium hydroxide N,N-dimethyl-N-tetradecyl-
    saccharinate.

    (indigo earth note: we don't see anything citrus there either.)

    The Indigo Earth's Disinfectant:

    In a pot of simmering water, I add:3 drops of cinnamon essential oil3 drops of rosemary essential oil6 drops of sweet orange essential oil.

    There is laboratory and scientific proof that these essential oils have the capability to kill pathogens within an area. I have a supply of these in preparation for the upcoming pandemic.

    Mr Clean Magic Eraser Cleaning Pads:

    Formaldehyde-Melamine-Sodium bisulfite copolymer.

    (ie note: I have actually used these, and yes they do work. Never again though. What causes a company to create such a toxic product? Is it really all about money?)

    The Indigo Earth Cleaning Pads:

    Anything but the above, or . . .check out the natural cleaners page for a variety of methods. And know that you are not limited to the ingredients on that page, there are hundreds of natural ingredients capable of cleaning and disinfecting your environment.

    Purex Liquid Laundry Detergent, Free & Clear

    Sodium carbonate
    Sodium laureth sulfate
    Alcohols, C12-16, ethoxylated (Isureth-4)
    Benzenesulfonic acid, C10-C16-alkyl derivatives.

    (indigo earth note: Free & Clear of what exactly, certainly not chemicals.)

    At the Indigo Earth, for laundry I have used my accidentally too-high-in-ph soap, grated, and combined with washing soda and borax, creating an all natural laundry detergent.

    Arm & Hammer Fresh and Soft Fabric Softener, Classic Fresh

    Fragrance(s)/perfume(s)
    Di (C14-1S-alkyl) dimethyl methyl sulfate
    Surfactant(s)
    (C14-C18) Dialkyldimethylammonium methyl sulfate

    (indigo earth note: Those ingredients in toxic air fresheners will include the scents in products like fabric softener too. Example is Classic Fresh . . . those words allow us to think that our clothes will be fresh, like in fresh air, waving in the breeze drying. But instead, it is a chemical combination that emits a gas-like substance that oddly has a scent similar to a fresh laundry scent.)

    The Indigo Earth uses:

    nothing.
