Oatmeal for skin care
good for your insides and out!
Oatmeal for skin care can be obtained from this wild and now domesticated grass. One of my best selling soaps was an Orange and Oatmeal soap, with orange and lemongrass essential oils and organic oatmeal. This grain is well known for its nutritional and dietary benefits, but it is also very good for your skin.
Oatmeal for skin care is super easy, for a bath soak, fill a muslin type bag of oatmeal and hang it under the bath faucet while the hot water pours through. You could pour the oats right into the bath water, but they do like to stick to hair. Another option is to buy colloidal oatmeal, which is oats that are pulverized into a powder, and therefore able to be poured into a bath soak.
There are some store brands with this powdered oatmeal, but there is chemicals and other synthetic added as well. The well known Aveeno oatmeal bath products are made by the Johnson & Johnson company.
The following recipes are extremely flexible. Use the ingredients that you have and don't worry if you are missing something. Do some experimenting with your own special blend of ingredients. Here are some recipes to get you started:
Milk and Honey bath soak:
Mix ingredients and add to bag, attach to tap so water may pass through it, or let the bag float around in the tub with you.
Sugar Oat scrub:
Mix together, apply gently before bathing or showering, then rinse off and shower as usual.
Skin Relief Poultice:
Skin softener bath:
Mix together into a tied cheesecloth or muslin bag and add to your bath water.
Below is a good example of why you should make your own products. First is the advertising hype for this baby bath product, 2nd is the ingredients, and 3rd is what Laureth 4 is all about:
AVEENO® Baby Soothing Bath Treatment combines ultra finely milled natural colloidal oatmeal with moisturizers to relieve dry, itchy and irritated skin due to rashes, eczema and other irritation. When dispersed in water, the hypoallergenic powder forms a milky bath that soothes as it naturally cleanses without soap. After bathing, your baby's skin is softer, smoother and relieved of the irritation associated with dry skin.
Active Ingredients:Colloidal Oatmeal (43%). Inactive Ingredients: Mineral Oil, Calcium Silicate, Laureth 4.
About LAURETH-4: Laureth-4 is a synthetic polymer composed of lauryl alcohol and PEG (polyethylene glycol). Due to the presence of PEG, this ingredient may contain potentially toxic manufacturing impurities such as 1,4-dioxane.
