Treat Nail Fungus Naturally

From pharmacuetical treatment to natural cures, read about your options here!

Treat nail fungus naturally! Nail fungus is made up of tiny organisms called dermatophytes that can infect fingernails and toenails. The location of nail fungus, under the nail, makes this skin disorder difficult to reach.
This fungus prefers dark, warm and moist conditions, making underneath your nails the perfect habitat; adding the fact that socks and shoes assist in creating this hospitable environment.

This toenail fungus is a chronic condition that rarely heals on it’s own, and will continue to involve more and more of the nail and spread to other nails.

Other factors that involve this disease include an abnormal pH level of the skin, trauma to the nail, diabetes, poor hygiene of the foot, and/or a decreased immune system.

To treat nail fungus naturally, check on the symptoms of nail fungus:

  • The nail separating from the nail bed
  • Infection material may build up under the nail and cause discoloration.
  • Nails may look brownish, yellowish, and black or have little white patches.
  • Nails may get flaky, brittle, and chipped.
  • Bits of debris may collect under your nails.
  • Your nails may have an odor.
  • Toenails may thicken causing pain when wearing shoes.

    The Statistics:

  • 50 percent of all nail disorders are fungal infections.
  • Fungal infections can be difficult to treat.
  • Medically known as Onychomycosis and Tinea of the nails.
  • Toenails are 80% more likely to acquire a fungal infection.
  • 10 – 30% of North Americans suffer from some degree of nail infection.
  • Half of the population will have at least one toenail infected in their lifetime.
  • Nail fungus is very common, although usually hidden.

    Those Pharmacueticals:

Itraconazole, sold as Sporanox® A treatment marketed by Janssen. This pill is taken twice a day for one week of every month for three or four months at a cost of $100.00 for a one-week supply. Itraconazole is less effective than terbinafine, and it too is has side effects associated with liver failure and congestive heart failure.

Terbinafine, sold as Lamisil® The most widely prescribed treatment is Terbinafine, marketed by Novartis. For 12 weeks, sufferers take one 250-milligram tablet daily, thereafter the accumulated medicine continues to work for a few more months. Terbinafine, according to the package insert, helps 66% of people who take it, but the reported actual cure rate is 38%. Lamisil, at $8 per pill, creates a treatment package that can cost you about $700. Lamisil is not safe for those with any liver problems and sadly death has occurred from this product. Liver function would require close monitoring and is deemed not safe for children, pregnant women or nursing mothers.

A recent study shows that there is only about a 35% - 50% complete cure rate after 72 steady weeks of using Lamisil or Sporanox.

nail fungus treatment Fluconazole, sold as Diflucan®, has shown to sometimes have side effects such as upset stomach, headaches, and liver damage as well costing over $900 for just the treatment medications.

Ciclopirox, sold as Loprox and Penlac™ Nail Lacquer, a topical prescription medication marketed by Aventis, is applied like nail polish to infected nails each evening before bed. Once a week, rubbing alcohol is used to remove the accumulated layers. Penlac takes 48 weeks, and a month's supply is known to cost more than $100, for a total treatment price of $1,100.00. Studies show that Ciclopirox is able to lessen the infection in less than 50% of all cases, and the total cure results are a discouraging 10% and less.

Amorolfine, sold as Loceryl. A 5 ml bottle of this costs $75.00 US and is a topical medication applied like a nail polish for up to 1 year! Each 5ml bottle contains 250 mg of the hydrochloride amorolfine (a 5% solution), methacrylic acid copolymer, glycerol triacetate, butyl acetate, ethyl acetate, and absolute ethanol.

    Surgery?:

Again, one non-pharmaceutical yet medical method of eliminating this fungus, is the surgical removal of the nail. No nail – no friendly environment for the fungus!

    Maintenance and avoidance:

  • Sterilize fingernail clippers with diluted bleach.
  • The nails should be trimmed and filed down carefully.
  • Do not share nail clippers or nail files.
  • Nail fungus will try to spread to your other nails.
  • Nail fungus is a live organism and lives where the air is moist, like a shower stall, ensure that surfaces are dry to prevent further transmission.

    Essential Oils or Pharmacuetical Medications?

One of the statistics from the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) states that prescription drugs are killing up to 140,000 Americans per year. Herbal alternatives taken internally (not topical essential oils) have fatally harmed approximately 40 people a year.
